Women's 200 Meter Breaststroke

Lethal Leisel dominates this stroke, and looks to pick up double gold with a strong chance of doing so. She set the WR back in 2006 at 2:20.54, though she’s only gone 2:21.34 so far this year. Even that slow time is over a second ahead of everyone else this year.  This is Leisel’s race, and perhaps her best chance to finally get that elusive individual Olympic gold.

Leisel Jones looks to bring home gold for Australia

The USA has the second fastest swimmer this year, Rebecca Soni, leading the team in this event. She went 2:22.60 at trials and quite decidedly won the event. Amanda Beard managed to race her way onto her 4th Olympic Team in this event with a 2:25.13, making her the 9th fastest swimmer this year. She is defending champ, but has been on a 3 year haitus from competition so may not be in the top shape anymore. Amanda can race though; she may not have been competing but she didn't forget how.

We first saw Amanda Beard's distinctive breaststroke in the Atlanta games

There is some separation at the top of the field in this event. Leisel Jones is the class of the field, but although Soni’s times aren’t close to Jones’s best, she’s still well over a second ahead of the next best swimmer. Megumi Tandeda is the third fastest swimmer this year with a 2:23.96 at the Japanese Championships, but she and the next 8 or so swimmers all bunch within a second of each other including Russian Yuliya Efimova, Mirna Jukic, Annamay Pierse, Suel Ki Jung, Amanda Beard, and Olga Detenyuk.
