Women's 100 Meter Butterfly
Watch out world, here comes an Aussie 1-2 sweep. Libby Tricket is ON FIRE! Three gold medals is a very real possibility for her. I have a feeling that Trickett (formerly Lenton) is going to put on a show for the Australians like Phelps is going to do for American TV viewers (but they don’t have to deal with Bob Costas asking her if she can communicate telepathically with fish).

Jessicah Schipper is POWERFUL! She took the silver at Worlds last year. Trickett and Schipper are the favorites, but they don’t have a huge lead on the rest of the field. Trickett is just two tenths shy of Inge de Bruijn’s WR (Libby: 56.81, Inge 56.61). Schipper’s a half second back at 57.31. Watch for Schipper in the 200 where she will likley be on the podium again if not golden.
The American team is comprised of two first time Olympians. Christine Magnuson leads us with a time of 57.50 she set at trials. 19 year old Elaine Breeden is not far behind with her time of 58.03, putting her in the top 5 swimmers in Beijing in this event. Both of them could possibly end up on the podium in Beijing, but the international field is going to be hot on their heels.
Magnuson wasn't able to best Lenton in Melbourne
Europe is churning out some hardcore women’s Butterfliers. Jemma Lowe of Great Britain is the 4th fastest swimming this year at 57.78 and has the best chance of getting a European country’s flag raised at the medal ceremony. Inge Dekker, Marleen Veldhuis, and Francesca Halsall are all under 58.25 making this a crowded and fast final.
Medal Predictions:
- Gold: Libby Trickett
- Silver: Jessicah Schipper
- Bronze: Christine Magnuson
