Women's 200 Meter Butterfly
The 200 Fly is awesome! There is a great battle that is always waged in the pool not just against the competition but also yourself. This is the longest race of the power stroke. There is also a battle between swimming's to superpowers the USA and Australia. Mary T. Meagher (USA), Summer Sanders (USA), Susie O'Neill (AUS), Misty Hyman (huge upset of O'Neill in Sydney no less), and now Aussie Jessicah Schipper whose WR stands at 2:05.40.
Schipper leads fellow Aussie Samantha Hamill into Beijing
If Schipper doesn't win, it may very well be Otiliya Jedrzejczak of Poland who wins the race to defend her gold medal from Athens. She had a bad car accident in '05 and lost her brother in that same accident. It was her WR that Schipper broke in '06, but now she's back, and looking strong she was under 2:06 last year and that's what it will take to win in Beijing.
19 year olds Kathleen Hersey and Breeden (below) represent the USA
The States are led by Elaine Breedan who is also competing in the 100 Fly. Elaine actually put up a faster time than Schipper has this year with a 2:06.75. It'll take a best time, but should could be on the podium at the end of this race. Along side Breedan will be youngster Kathleen Hersey. Only 18, she's the 9th fastest swimmer this year in this event, and seems primed to drop some time. I almost want to put her on the podium predictions.
Elaine Breeden won US trials, she and Hersey are first time Olympians
Medal Predictions:
- Gold: Elaine Breedan
- Silver: Otiliya Jedrzejczak
- Bronze: Jessicah Schipper
